Wendy Long Pledges to Recommend Preet Bharara for Reappointment, Calls On Schumer to do the Same

Wendy Long, Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in New York, today signed a pledge that if elected to the U.S. Senate, she will recommend to the next President of the United States that Preet Bharara be reappointed as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

"U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was right when he recently called New York the "market leader' for corruption and said current anti-corruption efforts are like "a doctor treating organ failure and limb dysfunction with an aspirin.'

"Mr. Bharara clearly gets it, and he is doing what New Yorkers have long been waiting for: cleaning up corruption in government. Year after year, we've watched outright scandals and the smoke of obvious corruption, knowing where there is smoke, there is indeed fire. But these professional politicians just kept doing what they do best: accepting bribes outright, using power to benefit themselves or family members, or engaging in more subtle practices like misusing slush funds to cover up wrongdoing and doing the bidding of campaign contributors in ways that are harder to trace.

"The levels of corruption that exist at all levels of our government are outrageous, and there is nothing more important than to keep these prosecutions coming. Preet Bharara is getting better and better, and I don't think New Yorkers want him to stop. I certainly want him to keep doing what he has been doing, and I have today signed a pledge that if elected, I shall recommend to the next President -- whom I firmly believe and pray will be Donald Trump -- that he retain Mr. Bharara as our U.S. Attorney for the Southern District and give him a free hand, without any political pressure whatsoever, to root out every bit of political corruption at the local, state, and federal levels. I know that Donald Trump is determined to end the pay-for-play culture that has infested both Washington and Albany.

"I am today calling upon my opponent, Chuck Schumer, to make this same pledge to the people of New York, if he should be re-elected."
